The numbers are in!!! The 1st Annual Gerad Meteyer Foundation Picnic, which took place on Sunday, July 20, 2008 in Farmington Hills, Michigan, was a HUGE success! We raised over $12,000.00 toward our goal of Generating Educational Resources and Assistance for Diabetics! That money will be earmarked for the purpose of sending underprivileged diabetic kids to the American Diabetes Association's Camp Midicha next summer and in the years to come.

The outpouring of love and generosity by those attending the picnic (we estimate over 200 people), and those who couldn't attend but supported our mission financially, was overwhelming. The weather was beautiful, the venue was perfect, and the silent auction added a fun, competitive spirit to the event. It simply could not have happened without the support of so many individuals, families, and businesses. We're still in the process of adding contributors to the website, but our heartfelt thanks goes out to each of you. We're also gathering pictures of the picnic to add to this website. If you have any photos to share, please e-mail them to meteyer@hotmail.com with Gerad's name in the subject.

As the one-year anniversary of Gerad's death approaches near Labor Day, our dedication to fulfill his legacy and to keep his memory alive is amplified. What can you expect from the Gerad Meteyer Foundation in the coming year? Our goals include identifying campers for next summer to benefit from some of the funds we've raised thus far, establishing our own non-profit status, and expanding our mission to include the provision of supplies and the offsetting of medical expenses for uninsured diabetic children and young adults. Soon we will set the date for next year's picnic fundraiser, so please check back.

One mother of a child with diabetes reached out to us with a financial contribution before the picnic this July. Her daughter attended Camp Midicha for the second time this summer and the mother described her daughter's sentiments in these words: "She probably talks more and looks forward more to Camp Midicha than presents under the tree at Christmas. It has been hugely beneficial for her. I have a special appreciation for Camp Midicha and would be willing to do almost anything for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Camp Midicha was also a strong and positive influence in Gerad's life. On behalf of all of the children and their families who will benefit from the generosity of so many of you, we thank you for making our dreams come true and for honoring Gerad's memory in such a beautiful and meaningful way.

Forever grateful,

The Meteyer Family
